RASARATNA SAMUCHCHAYA: A CRITICAL REVIEW OF ITS HISTORICAL EVOLUTION, SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS, PHARMACEUTICAL PRINCIPLES AND CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF RASASHASTRA

Abstract

Rasaratna Samuchchaya is one of the most authoritative and systematically organized treatises of classical Rasashastra, representing the culmination of centuries of progress in Ayurvedic Pharmaceutics. Traditionally attributed to Acharya Vagbhatta and compiled during the 13th Century A.D., the text integrates diverse concepts of Mercury (Parada), metals, minerals, gemstones, poisons, pharmaceutical processing techniques, laboratory infrastructure, pharmaceutical instruments, heating technologies and herbo-mineral formulations into a single coherent scientific framework. Unlike earlier Rasashastra treatises that primarily emphasize individual pharmaceutical procedures or alchemical practices, Rasaratna Samuchchaya presents a comprehensive and sequential account of the principles governing the identification, purification, processing, formulation and therapeutic application of mineral-based medicines. The treatise reflects the transition of Rasashastra from an alchemical discipline concerned with metallurgical transformations to a clinically oriented pharmaceutical science focused on safe, standardized and effective therapeutics. Its systematic classification of mineral drugs, detailed descriptions of Shodhana, Marana, Parada Samskara, Yantras, Musha, Puta and numerous classical formulations significantly influenced subsequent Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical literature and continues to serve as a foundational reference for education, research and drug manufacturing. The present review critically examines the historical evolution of Rasaratna Samuchchaya, its literary organization, scientific concepts, pharmaceutical principles, therapeutic contributions and its role in shaping the development of Rasashastra. The review further highlights the contemporary relevance of this classical treatise in pharmaceutical standardization, quality assurance and evidence-based validation of Ayurvedic herbo-mineral medicines.
